Crocker Riverside 5th Graders, 1999-2000

When Mrs. Womack’s next class started fifth grade in 1999, they discovered that more damage had been done to the Mather Field vernal pools since the first two signs went up: three young men got their daddies’ trucks stuck up to their axles in mud.

The kids were outraged and decided to do something to prevent more damage to the vernal pools they had come to treasure. The students decided to raise funds to manufacture enough signs to line the perimeter of Mather Regional Park.

With help from several adults they produced a beautiful Mather Field millennium calendar featuring photos of colorful vernal pool flowers and critters. With help from California Native Plant Society volunteers, the class sold 150 calendars, enough to make 30 signs.
