Advanced Field Botany Class
Sacramento City College - Spring '14

Advanced Field Botany (Bio 494) class will held on Fridays, with class during the afternoon for the first eight weeks of the semester, from 1:00 to 5:00 PM. For the second eight weeks, we’ll be heading out on field trips, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

We’ll hone our field botany skills by practicing use of the new Jepson Manual, published in 2012. We’ll learn to recognize more (and more challenging!) families, genera and species in the field, especially those found in specific plant communities, as we will emphasize the ecological roles of California plants in this course. We’ll also preserve plant specimens on herbarium sheets, and learn about the importance of California’s herbaria and arboreta. Prerequisite for the course is Biology 320, Field Botany, or equivalent.
