Overview: Sign up for Splash Restoration Team
The Sac County Board of Supervisors has agreed with us that the vernal pools need immediate attention. That means Splash needs to make good on our promise to pull together teams of volunteers who can intervene at this critical moment to save the pools from being overrun. Every year, the pools grow smaller, their borders invaded by non-native, invasive weeds from the surrounding prairie.
Many possible solutions exist, including hand-weeding, weed-whacking, grazing, and controlled burns. But the truth is we don’t really know which solutions will work best at Mather Field. IT’S TIME TO DO SOME SCIENCE!
We’re going to put together teams of scientists, professors, and students of the natural world (both young and old!) Some teams will work together for one half-day. Other teams of citizen and professional scientists will stick together longer to identify the most effective means of restoring and managing the vernal pool prairies.
Much like our planet, this beautiful ecosystem is on the brink. Environmental problems like global warming can be scary and overwhelming, but right now, you can make a huge difference close to home. Please help us save this rare and ancient habitat for the critters, the flowers, and future generations of curious children.
SPECIAL SHOUT-OUT TO FORMER SPLASH STUDENTS! – YOU GUYS STILL KNOW MORE ABOUT THE VERNAL POOLS THAN THE MAJORITY OF THE POPULATION, BUT THANKS TO YOUR SPREADING THE STORY, MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE STANDING UP FOR THE POOLS. IF YOU STILL HAVE A SOFT SPOT FOR VERNAL POOLS AND THEIR RESIDENT CRITTERS AND FLOWERS, PLEASE HELP US BRING THEM BACK FROM THE BRINK. WE NEED YOU NOW, SO PLEASE REACH OUT. THANKS!
