Hydrology - The role of water

In a vernal pool grassland, the movement of rainwater through the soil is stopped by a cement-like layer called hardpan. The water stays perched above the hardpan, where we see it in the shallow depressions called vernal pools. The pools host hundreds of species of tiny aquatic organisms.

Patient, little bees

Solitary Bees generally only collect pollen and nectar from a single species of plant (or from a few closely-related plants). Researchers have discovered that vernal pool Solitary Bees can hibernate underground for up to four years, waiting for the 2-3 weeks when their host plant is in bloom.
