UPDATE March 11, 2017: All Vernal Pool Tours are now SOLD OUT. However, we normally get a substantial number of cancellations, so please join the waiting list and there’s a chance we’ll be able to fit you in. Thanks!
During the wet phase, the pools host many dozens of species of aquatic invertebrates. Half of them have not even been named! Watching and wondering about them draws us deeper into their ancient, mysterious world. Bigger critters who eat them come to the pools to dine: frogs, snakes, shore birds, wading birds, and more. If you want to meet them, along with their famous pool mates the Fairy Shrimp and Tadpole Shrimp, sign up for a Critter Walk!
As the spring sun warms the earth and the pools evaporate, the wet phase gives rise to the flower phase. During the month of April, flowers bloom in an ever-changing abundance of colorful rings and we want you to see it! The uplands (in between the pools) host their own suite of species, while the wetlands provide habitat for dozens of flowers that only bloom in vernal pools. Each pool has its own assortment of flowers depending upon the soil, hydrology and many factors we don’t yet understand. They change from week to week as the pools dry up. Sign up for a Flower Walk!
Tours last two hours and are led by volunteer docents.
Tours are FREE but we welcome tax-deductible donations in support of our environmental science programs for schoolchildren.
