Help us restore the Mather Field Vernal Pools
Are you interested in environmental protection and advocacy of Sacramento’s vernal pools ecosystems? Do you want to have a direct impact on land-use management? Are you invigorated by creating outdoor education opportunities for children and adults alike? If so, Splash is looking for new volunteers!
After many years of deferred management, the restoration of Mather Field is underway. A preserve manager has been selected by the County of Sacramento and the community’s help is needed to observe and rehabilitate this threatened habitat. Every year, the pools have grow smaller, their borders invaded by non-native, invasive weeds from the surrounding prairie. Possible solutions include hand-weeding, weed-whacking, mowing, grazing, and many other methods.
IT’S TIME TO DO SOME SCIENCE! Splash is pulling together teams of scientists, professors, and students of the natural world (both young and old!) to monitor results and determine the best means to restore and manage the vernal pool prairie over time. Volunteers will be guided by experienced scientists and mentors, so this is a great chance to learn more about this threatened ecosystem. Environmental problems can seem scary and overwhelming but now you can make a huge difference close to home. Please help us save and protect this rare and ancient habitat for the critters, the flowers, and future generations of curious children.
If you want to be part of Splash’s Volunteer Teams, whether for one day or many years, please fill out this quick form. Let us know your preferences and we’ll contact you soon to discuss our volunteer opportunities.
