The Splash program’s Nature in the Neighborhood series provides free, fun, and educational nature programs to audiences of all ages and interests. Most of these programs and activities are designed for families, though some specialty workshops may be geared towards adults.
Many of the programs are conducted by Splash staff, consisting of professional scientists, educators, and naturalists. We also invite special guest presenters to share their expertise about wild things. For information about exciting Nature in the Neighborhood events, please check out our upcoming programs.
All programs begin at Splash Education Center. Most will involve a walk (usually no more than a mile) to investigate the various habitats and wildlife at Mather. Be sure to wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes and dress appropriately for the weather.
Each year Nature in the Neighborhood hosts a family field trip to explore life in the Mather Field vernal pools during the aquatic phase (in late February or early March) and during the flower phase (in mid-April). These walks cater to families with children. Families are also welcome on public tours led by volunteer docents from the California Native Plant Society, see CNPS vernal pool tours, on the last three Sundays in April.
Although the Nature in the Neighborhood programs are free, donations are gratefully accepted. Suggested donations are $10/adult and $5/child (ages 5-18). We cannot accommodate unaccompanied minors at these programs.
Reservations are strongly recommended and may be made by filling out the online reservation form or by calling (916) 364-2437.
