For Goodness Snakes!
Get to Know Your Local Snakes
Saturday,
August 16
10:00am - 12:30pm
Although many humans have a visceral
fear of snakes (known as ophidiophobia), these amazing animals
certainly are not the evil creatures portrayed by myths and
movies. In fact, snakes possess a remarkable collection of
adaptations that give them graceful movement, acute senses,
and the ability to hunt quick prey.
Come and learn about what snakes are
found in our area, their unique survival strategies, and the
critical role they play in the ecosystem. Meet several live
snakes and
only if you would like to... you'll have a chance
to hold a live snake!
The
first part of this program will take place at the Splash
Education Center, where you'll see a slide show about the
snakes of our region.
We'll also explore some snake myths and discuss
why so many people are afraid of snakes.
Following the indoor portion of the
program, we'll take a walk through some of the habitats of
Mather Regional Park to hunt for the snakes that reside there.
If we're lucky, we may see a Valley Garter Snake, Gopher
Snake, California Kingsnake, or even a Yellow-bellied Racer!
Splash Guide David Rosen will present
this program. In addition to leading tours for Sacramento Splash, David
is widely respected for his work as a freelance naturalist and
wildlife photographer.
Wear good walking shoes for the field
portion of this program. Reserve your spot early! If you miss
this program, you'll have a "hissy" fit!
Fees for this program
are $10.00/adult and $5.00/child (5-18) and are payable by
cash or check. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are recommended.
