It's a Hoot!
Owls of the Sacramento Region

Barn OwlSaturday, June 14
7:00pm - 9:30pm

Are owls really wise? Can they swivel their heads 360-degrees around? Do all owls hoot? Owls have fascinated humans for centuries. Some cultures believe they are symbols of wisdom, while others believe they are signs of impending of doom and death.

The first part of this program will take place at the Splash Education Center, where you'll see a slide show as a basic introduction to owls, specifically those of our region. Listen to the calls of our local owls so you can recognize "whoo's" calling outside your window at night. Then you can be a nature detective and investigate what some owls have been eating by dissecting regurgitated owl pellets. AND… you'll have a chance to get "up close and personal" with a live owl!

Screech OwlFollowing the indoor portion of the program, we'll head out into the field at dusk and look for owls hunting in the grasslands of Mather Regional Park. We may see Burrowing Owls, Barn Owls, or even a Great-horned Owl!

Join Splash Guide David Rosen, as he sheds some light on owl mythology, as well as the physical adaptations that allow owls to be one of nature's most efficient hunters. In addition to leading environmental education programs for Sacramento Splash, David works as a freelance naturalist, photographer, and public relations consultant.

Wear good walking shoes for the field portion of this program. Reserve your spot early, as this program is a real hoot!

Fees for this program are $10.00/adult and $5.00/child (5-18) and are payable by cash or check. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Reservations are recommended.
