Procedure:
1. Students need clean hands! These books are
best made in small groups with lots of peer coaching.
2. Fold the paper in half - corners to corners
to create two equal rectangles.
Crease the fold well. (This is the secret to
excellent origami books!)
3. Open up the paper. Fold the paper in half
again to create two more equal rectangles. Crease well.
4. Open up the paper. Fold the paper in half
along the diagonal – creating 2 (congruent and right isosceles)
triangles. Crease well. (Make only 1
diagonal fold!)
5. Open the paper. The fold should have created
two small squares diagonally opposite each other and two other
small squares diagonally opposite each other that are divided into
triangles.
6. Next gently push in the corners that have
triangles. This will create a small square that has a square top,
two sets of triangles that make squares and a square base.
7. Make a small "x" on the top corner
of the page where it opens. On the diagonal opposite corner make a
small "o". Label each page this way.
8. Next apply a thin line of glue around the
perimeter of one square. Place that square down so that the
opening is facing you and the glue is on top.
9. Attach the next square on top such that you
match the "x" with an "o" at the corners.
10. Next apply a thin line of glue on top of the
two attached pages. Again match each "x" with an
"o" when attaching. Continue in this fashion until all
four pages are attached.
11. Next attach book to tag board covers. Apply
thin line of glue around the perimeter of one end of the book.
Place that end onto one of the covers so that it is centered.
12. Apply glue to the perimeter of the other end
of the book. Place cover on top. Make sure that you line up this
cover with the other cover.
13. Place book under weight until the glue
dries.
14. Students write and illustrate at least 15 to
20 vernal pool facts on squares and triangles. |
